Creating your own path within Prodrive Technologies

“When I moved here, my English was quite average and my Criminal Law degree from Lithuania wasn’t very useful without knowing Dutch. Because of this, I struggled to find a job at first. However, I was eager to work and didn't shy away from manual work, so I started working as Technician. It was a valuable experience, but after a year, I started to feel… too comfortable. I told myself: “Monika, this isn't your purpose. You can do more.””

So, what did you decide to do? 

“To enhance my chances, I decided to study again and pursued a second master’s degree in Labor Law and Employment Relations at Tilburg University. During my studies, I did an internship at Prodrive, which led to a part-time role in HR. Eventually, they offered me a position as a Compliance Officer, and of course, I accepted the challenge. After all, who wouldn’t want to seize a great opportunity for growth? I began as a Compliance Officer and transitioned to Legal Counsel a couple of years ago.”

That’s quite an impressive journey! So, tell me, what does a legal counsel do actually?

“It's a very dynamic role. You have to be everywhere where people need you. I might work with the Sales team one day and the Purchasing team the next. My responsibilities include reviewing and drafting contracts, handling non-disclosure agreements and providing legal advice where needed, among other things. Essentially, I support the company in resolving legal challenges and ensuring that Prodrive's interests are protected.”

What do you like the most about your work?

“As a Legal Counsel, I truly enjoy the variety of challenges that come with the role. I love diving deep into contracts, understanding their nuances and navigating complex situations where there is no clear-cut answer. I also appreciate the close connection to the business, which allows me to understand its needs deeply and provide tailored legal support. Collaborating with different departments and being a part of a supportive and friendly Legal team makes the work even more rewarding. And with the variety of issues that come my way, it's safe to say that boredom is definitely not on my to-do list!"

What challenges do you face in your current role?

“One challenge I face is understanding the technical aspects of our products. To provide effective legal advice, I sometimes need to delve into these technical aspects, which can be overwhelming. However, with experience, I'm becoming more comfortable with these complexities and improving my understanding.”

Could you describe working at Prodrive in three words? 

“Can I also say one phrase, instead of three words? For me, the main thing that comes to mind is: “a possibility to grow.” At Prodrive, they really see their people and sometimes they even create possibilities specifically for them, because they want to keep them in the company. They give opportunities to people.”

How do you look back at your career so far?

“Over the past years, I’ve shifted positions within the company multiple times. Now that I’ve been a Legal Counsel for a while, I feel I’ve truly found my place. I find the work both engaging and motivating and it really drives me. Looking back, I'm pleased with how these experiences have shaped my career and helped me grow.”

Do you have any advice for future Prodrivers?

“Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to show your capabilities. If you want to do more, ask for it. Prodrive offers opportunities, but you have to be proactive and confident.”
